Robert walked back into the small reception area, and over to Katie’s desk again. “Hi, I don’t think I really introduced myself properly earlier, I’m Robert.” He smiled as he held out his hand.

Katie looked up at Robert with a small smile and slowly reached out to shake his hand. “I’m Katie, did you forget something? I didn’t know Mr. Goldstein wanted you to come back so soon.”

“No, I uh…this is kind of awkward, but I…uh…” Robert blushed a deep, scarlet color. “It looked like you were having such a bad day and your watch was broken. I just brought you something to maybe cheer you up and make your day better.” He held out the J&J Jewelry bag.

Katie looked at the bag and her breath caught in her throat. The small smile dropped from her face as she looked at the gift, “This is from J&J.”

“Yeah, little place a couple of blocks from here.”

Looking from the bag to Robert, Katie had to remind herself to breathe. “For me? But…I can’t accept that!” The thought that Robert could be married and just wanted to use her for sex immediately popped into Katie’s head.

Robert smiled and set the bag down on her desk. He reached inside and pulled out the small, wrapped package and held it out toward Katie. “Go on, open it.”

Katie looked at the package he was holding and was almost afraid to touch it. As she looked up into his eyes, Robert was smiling at her. He’s so handsome, Katie thought to herself, something’s got to be wrong with him. She slowly accepted the package and unwrapped it. As she opened the case, Katie let out a gasp.

“I can’t accept this, this must have cost a fortune!”

“Sure you can, your watch broke. Go on, I want you to have it.”

“I…I…I…” Katie stammered.

Robert reached out and took the case from Katie. He removed the watch, gently took her left hand, and turned it palm up. He then pulled the watch from its case and buckled it around Katie’s wrist. Robert took ahold of her hand again as he turned it this way and that, admiring the watch.

“It fits perfectly. And it looks wonderful on you!”

Katie looked at the watch on her wrist and felt emotion welling up inside her again. “I…I don’t know what to say. This…this is…”

“Well, I know it’s a little fancier than your other watch, but the lady at the shop assured me that it would brighten your day.”

“Brighten my day,” Katie repeated. She let out a loud sob, and felt several tears flowing down her face.

Robert stepped around the desk and put a hand on her shoulder. “Are you okay? I mean…I thought…I just wanted to cheer you up.”

Katie grabbed several tissues and dried her tears. After a few seconds, she regained control of herself and smiled up at Robert. “I’m…I’m sorry about all the tears. It’s…I just had a pretty bad start to my day. Thank you for this, though. I don’t know if you even realize how much this means to me.”

“Well, I’m glad it meant something. I’ve had bad days myself, and they suck. I’m glad I could make you feel better.” Robert smiled.

“So…you just came back to give me a watch? You don’t need anything else?” Katie asked.

“Well…yeah. I just…yeah, I should probably go. I have to find somewhere for dinner. You don’t happen to know anywhere good to eat in town, do you?”

“You’re married, aren’t you?” Katie asked, hesitantly.

“Me, married?” Robert asked. “No, not me. Nobody can stand me. I’m not married, are you?”

Katie sighed and shook her head. “No, but the last guy I was going out with was married, and I didn’t find out until today.”

“Oh geez, no wonder you were so down in the dumps, I’m sorry.” Robert said, looking concerned, “Some guys are shit-bags. Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?”

Katie’s thoughts swept back to Stewart. “I…I don’t know.”

“No strings attached. It might make you feel even better than the watch did. I know I’d really like the company, I hate eating alone.”

This drew a smile from Katie. “I do appreciate the thought. You don’t have a girlfriend somewhere, do you? I’d hate to go out with you and then find out you had a girlfriend back home.”

“No, no girlfriend.” Robert smiled, “It’s just me, single me.”

Katie looked down at the watch on her wrist. Just as everything had felt wrong with Stewart, things seemed to feel right with Robert. Deep down inside, she felt she could trust him with anything even though they had just met. Katie looked up from her wrist and into Robert’s eyes. She felt a jolt of excitement as she answered him.

“I’d love to have dinner with you.”

“Really? Really, you would? That’s…I’m…okay!” Robert began to blush again. “It’s…it’s still pretty early. Should…uh…could I maybe call you later? Maybe after you get off work?”

Seeing Robert become so flustered made Katie smile. He seemed so cute and innocent. She found a small notepad and wrote down her cell phone number on one of the pages. She handed it to Robert. “This is my cell number.” After thinking for a few seconds, Katie asked, “Do you have a cell phone, too? I know some people don’t like them. Would…would you give me your number, too?”

“I…uh…yeah! Of course I’ll give you my number!” Robert ripped the paper Katie had given him in half, found a pen and wrote down his number. “Call me anytime.”

Katie let out a small giggle. “Okay, anytime. How about I give you a call after I get home from work and change out of my work clothes? We can maybe make some plans then?”

Robert’s face filled with happiness. “Ab…absolutely. I’ll be waiting for your call. So…uh…Katie…I’ll be waiting. I’ll be looking forward to tonight.” Robert was grinning from ear to ear and was still blushing as he walked happily out of the office and toward the elevators.

As Katie watched Robert leave, she could feel her heart beating in her chest. The thought of having dinner with Robert later gave her such a warm feeling. She couldn’t wait to get to know him.
